Summary of the Case: In the night of the 3rd of January 2024, five relatives alerted the Alarm Phone shift team to a boat in distress in the Central Mediterranean. The boat had started on the 30th of December from Sfax. There were 52 people, including three women, one being pregnant, and two children on the boat. The shift team did not manage to reach the travellers and relayed all the information to the Italian, Maltese and Tunisian authorities. On the 3rd of January in the early evening, a relative recognised his child in a video posted on X by Open Arms, and we thereby learned about the rescue of the travellers.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
