Summary of the Case: In the late evening of the 16th of March, the Alarmphone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 20 people travelling in the Balearic Sea. The travellers had left Boumerdes, Algeria, in the very early morning the same day and were heading towards the Balearic Islands. Unfortunately, the Alarmphone shift team never managed to reach the people on the boat but immediately relayed all the information received from the relative to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. The shift team tried to get more information through the authorities, but they did not have any news. In the afternoon of the next day, we learned from the relative that the group had arrived on their own in Palma de Mallorca.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
