Summary of the Case: In the evening of 11th of December, the Alarmphone was alerted by a relative to a group of 16 travellers in the Alboran Sea. They had started their journey in Oran, Algeria. The boat was reported to be a grey zodiac. We called the people on the boat and they reported that their engine didn’t work anymore. They seemed to be in a very stressful situation and the connection was bad - therefore, the Alarmphone did not manage to get a GPS position. All information was immediately relayed to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Marítimo. Only an hour later, we were informed by the people on the boat, the relative and also Salvamento Marítimo, that all the people had been rescued and were brought to Almería.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
