Summary of the Case: On the 16th of October, a relative alerted the Alarm Phone shift team to a boat in distress in the Atlantic Ocean. The group of around 84 travellers, including 14 women and two children, had left Dakhla, Western Sahara, on the 14th of October at around 04:30 local time in a black zodiac. The shift team could not establish contact to the travellers but alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo to the distress case. During the next days, the shift teams tried to find out if this boat had been rescued and at one point got the confirmation from the relative, that the travellers had arrived in Spain.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
