Case name: 2022_12_23-Eastern Med - 1094

Situation: 29 people stranded on an island in the Turkish district of Mugla

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Eastern Mediterranean / Aegean Sea

Summary of the Case:

On 24 December 2022, we were alerted by relatives of a group who had stranded on the Turkish island of Kara Ada. They were 28 people, among them 7 women and 8 children. They were already stranded on this island since 3 days after their boat had wrecked.

At 8:28 CET, we alerted the Turkish coast guard by email and called them also shortly afterwards.

At 14:15 CET, during another call to MRCC Ankara, they confirmed that they found the group. MRCC Ankara reported that there were 29 people, not 28, and that they were all brought to the local police station in Bodrum.

Also the relatives confirmed shortly after that this group had been found.

Maritime area beyond and adjacent to the territorial sea in which the coastal state exercises sovereign rights for the purposes of exploring and exploiting, conserving and managing the natural resources, whether living or non-living, the seabed and its subsoil and the superjacent waters.
