Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 8th of August 2018Case name: 2018_08_08-AEG408
Situation: 20 travellers in urgent distress rescued and brought back to Turkey.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Aegean Sea
Summary of the Case: On Wednesday the 8th of August at 03.35am CEST, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a contact person to a group of 20 travellers, in distress close to the Turkish coast, forwarding us their position and phone number. We immediately reached the travellers who were panicking as their engine had stopped working, and water was entering the boat. At 3.45am we called the Greek coast guard and passed on the information we had. The officer told us to call the alert the Turkish coast guard, as the travellers were in Turkish waters, which we did. Our shift team stayed in contact with the travellers who were still in a state of panick, and tried to calm them down. At 4.22am the travellers told us that a vessel was approaching and shortly after they confirmed that they were being rescued by the Turkish coast guard.
