Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 4th of July 2023, the Alarm Phone shift team received a direct call from a boat in distress in the Strait of Gibraltar. Onboard were eight travellers who had left from Tanger the same morning. They were travelling on a rubber boat without a motor, so they were attempting to row. We immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, relaying all the information we had. After our first contact the travellers, we were no longer able to reach them. Only in the evening did we manage to establish contact again, and they told us that they had returned to Morocco by themselves as the conditions onboard had been too dangerous. They were all safely back on land.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
