Case name: 2023_02_06-ATL007

Situation: 43 people in distress in the Atlanatic Ocean rescued by Salvamento Maritimo to Lanzarote

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Atlantic Ocean

Summary of the Case: In the early morning of the 6th of February 2023 the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 43 travelers, including 6 women and a child on a gray-black rubber boat in distress in the Atlantic Ocean. The travelers had left from TanTan, Morocco at 23 o’clock CET the night before (5th of February).

The relative forwarded us a GPS-position they had received from the boat. We relayed all the information we had to the Spanish Search and Rescue organization Salvamento Maritimo via E-Mail. Later on between 7 and 8 o’clock CET we were able to establish a direct contact to the travelers and they forwarded us their current GPS position, which we forwarded to Salvamento Maritimo. We observed on VesselFinder that the rescue vessel “SALVAMAR AL NAIR” had left Lanzarote. We stayed in close contact with the travelers, forwarding the current GPS-positions to Salvamento Maritimo. The tweet from Salvamento Maritimo (https://twitter.com/salvamentogob/status/1622528477743161346) indicated a successful rescue operation. When calling Salvamento Maritimo around 11 CET they confirmed the rescue of the 43 travelers to Lanzarote. We informed the relative we had been alerted by.
