Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 4th of October 2022 the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 20 travellers in distress in the Alboran Sea. The travellers had left from Al Hoceima the same morning at around 04.00 CEST on a blue and white wooden boat. We were not able to reach the boat but immediately relayed all the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. We later learned that 28 people had arrived in Malaga and another 19 people rescued by the Guardia Civil, but we were unable to get a final confirmation that the group we had been alerted to was among those rescued.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
