Summary of the case: On Saturday the 10th of September 2022 the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 31 travellers, all men, in distress in the Alboran Sea. The travellers were travelling on a black boat and had left from Nador the previous morning at around 02.00 CEST. We were not able to establish direct contact to the travellers, but immediately relayed all the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. In the afternoon, we learned from the relative that the travellers had been intercepted by the Moroccan navy.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
