Summary of the case: On Thursday the 30th of June 2022 in the late evening, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 19 travellers, including three children, in distress in the Alboran Sea. The travellers had left from Bouyafar at around midday on a black rubber boat. We were not able to establish a direct connection to the boat, but alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo to the distress situation, forwarding all the information we had. At around 04.00 CEST the following morning, the engine stopped working. However, the travellers were able to restart it a few hours later. In the afternoon we learned that the travellers had returned by themselves to Morocco due to high waves.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
