Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 25th June 2022

Case name: 2022_06_25-ATL061

Situation: 58 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Sea, rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to the Canary Islands.

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea

Summary of the case: On Saturday the 25th of June the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 58 travellers, including seven women and two children, in distress in the Atlantic Ocean. The travellers had left from Tarfaya in the early hours of the morning on a blue and white rubber boat. We managed to reach the travellers in the morning and get their GPS position. However, communication was very difficult due to bad connection. We immediately relayed all the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. After our initial contact to the travellers we were no longer able to establish contact to the boat. In the afternoon, Salvamento Maritimo informed us that they had rescued the travellers and were bringing them to the Canary Islands.

  • Border police patrols

While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33). Data source: interviews with border police officials.

  • Exclusive Economic Zone

Maritime area beyond and adjacent to the territorial sea in which the coastal state exercises sovereign rights for the purposes of exploring and exploiting, conserving and managing the natural resources, whether living or non-living, the seabed and its subsoil and the superjacent waters. Its breadth is 200 nautical miles from the straight baselines from which the territorial sea is measured (UNCLOS, Arts. 55, 56 and 57).
