Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 24th June 2022Case name: 2022_06_24-ATL060
Situation: Convoy of three boats in distress in the Atlantic, intercepted by the Moroccan Navy
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea
Summary of the case: On Friday the 24th of June 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of around 55 travellers, including 10 women and a child, in distress in the Atlantic Ocean. The travellers had left from Tarouma around 24 hours earlier on a blue plastic boat in a convoy with two other boats. However, only one of the boats was carrying a satellite phone and therefore able to communicate with people on land. The travellers had no more fuel left and were therefore left drifting. We immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, relaying all the information we had. However, the following afternoon we learned that the travellers had been intercepted by the Moroccan navy together with the two other boats they had departed with.
