Situation: Convoy of two boats in distress in the Atlantic Sea, both intercepted by the Moroccan navy.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea
Summary: On Saturday the 5th of February 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a convoy of two boat, one carrying 60 travellers, including 13 women and four children, the other carrying 59 travellers, including 15 women and three children, in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left from around Boujdour the same morning at 02.00 CET on two rubber boats, heading towards the Canary Islands. We were initially not able to reach the boats directly, but were forwarded their GPS position by the relative. We immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo to the distress of the travellers, relaying all the information we had. Some hours later, we managed to reach one group of travellers. They told us that they had run out of petrol and were therefore drifting. At 20.40 CET the travellers told us that a vessel was approaching them. Half an hour later, the Moroccan rescue authorities informed us on the phone that they had just rescued a boat with 59 travellers in the position we had provided and were now proceeding to rescue the 60 travellers. The following day, the Moroccan rescue authorities confirmed to us that both boats had been intercepted by the Moroccan navy.
