Situation: 59 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Ocean, rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to Gran Canaria.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea
Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 2nd of June 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 59 travellers, including seven women and two children, in distress in the Atlantic Ocean. The travellers had left from Tan Tan at around 03.00 CEST the same morning on a rubber boat. We managed to reach them and got their GPS position. The travellers told us that they had no more fuel left and their voices sounded panicked. After this, we lost contact to them. We immediately relayed all the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. In the night we could see online that one of the rescue vessels of Salvamento Maritimo was heading to the position of the people in distress and then returning to Gran Canaria. Soon after, the relative confirmed that the travellers had been rescued by Salvamento Maritimo.
