Case name: 2022_05_17-WM-ATL053

Situation: 52 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Sea, rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to Gran Canaria

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea

Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 17th of May 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 52 travellers, including seven women and five children, in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left the previous day at around 02.00 CEST from Boujdour on a grey wooden boat. The relative had lost contact to the boat and we were also not able to establish a direct connection. However, we relayed all the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo who confirmed that they were sending an aircraft to search for the travellers and instructing a merchant vessel to proceed towards the position of the boat in distress they received directly from the people on the boat. In the early afternoon, Salvamento Maritimo informed us that they had localised the boat and that a rescue vessel had been sent to carry out the rescue operation. At 21.20 CEST Salvamento Maritimo confirmed to us on the phone that the rescue operation was completed and that the travellers would be brought to Gran Canaria.

  • Border police patrols

While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33). • Exclusive Economic Zone

Maritime area beyond and adjacent to the territorial sea in which the coastal state exercises sovereign rights for the purposes of exploring and exploiting, conserving and managing the natural resources, whether living or non-living, the seabed and its subsoil and the superjacent waters. Its breadth is 200 nautical miles from the straight baselines from which the territorial sea is measured (UNCLOS, Arts. 55, 56 and 57). • Frontex operations

Frontex has, in the past few years, carried out several sea operations at the maritime borders of the EU. The blue shapes indicate the approximate extend of these operations. Data source: Migreurop Altas.
