Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 1st September 2022

Case name: 2022_09_01-ATL098

Situation: 54 travellers in distress in the Atlantic, rescued by the Guardia Civil and brought to Las Palmas.

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Atlantic Ocean

Summary of the case: On Thursday the 1st of September 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 54 travellers, including nine women, in distress in the Atlantic Ocean. The travellers had left from between Guelmim and Tan Tan on the 30th of August 2022 at 02.00 CEST. As they had no satellite phone onboard, we were not able to establish a direct contact to the travellers. The relative who alerted us told us that they had last spoken on the phone to the travellers five and a half hour ago, and that at this point the travellers were panicking and in urgent need of rescue. We immediately relayed all the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. In the morning we spoke to the Spanish Guardia Civil who informed us that the boat had been rescued and brought to Las Palmas.
