Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 1st September 2022Case name: 2022_09_01-ATL097
Situation: Around 50 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Ocean, intercepted by the Moroccan navy.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Ocean
Summary of the case: On Thursday the 1st of September 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of around 50 travellers, including nine women and four babies, in distress in the Atlantic Ocean. The travellers had left from between Tan Tan and Guelmim on the 30th of August at 04.00 CEST. We were not able to reach the boat directly, but immediately relayed all the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. They told us that they had been searching the area in the evening without finding any boats. We also called the Moroccan rescue authorities who informed us that they had several ongoing operations but could not confirm whether this boat was among them. In the afternoon the Spanish Guardia Civil told us that neither Spanish nor Moroccan rescue authorities had been able to find the boat. Two days later, we were informed by the Guardia Civil that the boat had been intercepted by the Moroccan navy.
