Case name: 2022_07_25-ATL076

Situation: 55 travellers in distress in the Atlantic, intercepted by the Moroccan navy.

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Atlantic Ocean

Summary of the case: On Monday the 25th of July 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 55 travellers, including 14 women and five children, in distress in the Atlantic Ocean. The travellers had left from Tan Tan the same morning at 02.00 local time. We managed to reach the travellers once, but due to very bad connection it was not possible to get their GPS position or much additional information about their situation. Hours later, we reached them again, and it became evident that they were in distress and needed urgent rescue. However, it was still not possible to get their position. The following day we learned that the travellers had been intercepted by the Moroccan navy and were being held by the Moroccan police.

  • Exclusive Economic Zone

Maritime area beyond and adjacent to the territorial sea in which the coastal state exercises sovereign rights for the purposes of exploring and exploiting, conserving and managing the natural resources, whether living or non-living, the seabed and its subsoil and the superjacent waters. Its breadth is 200 nautical miles from the straight baselines from which the territorial sea is measured (UNCLOS, Arts. 55, 56 and 57).
