Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea
Summary: On Thursday the 6th of January 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of around 55 travellers, including eight women, in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left on the 4th of January in the early hours of the morning from Tantan. We were not able to establish direct contact to the boat, but alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo to the distress situation, forwarding all the information we had. From the authorities we learned that two boat potentially matching the description we had received had been intercepted by the Moroccan navy. In one of the cases, two dead bodies had been found onboard. Our thoughts and solidarity are with the friends and families of those who lost their lives in their attempt to reach Europe.
