Summary of the Case:

In the afternoon of the 19th of August 2022, Alarm Phone was called by a worried relative, alerting us to a group of 18 people including many women and children in distress on Lesvos Island, Greece. The caller related that some of the children were unaccompanied and at least one person was in critical condition and needed medical attention. We tried to establish direct contact to the group but without success, so we alerted the Greek authorities at 17:53. We didn’t manage to achieve contact with the group and the outcome of their situation is unknown.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
