Summary of the Case: On the 30th of July 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 22 people at sea between Lesvos and Turkey. It was not confirmed how many people were in the group by the travellers themselves. Alarm Phone was told they had been pushed back from Greek to Turkish territorial waters. Alarm Phone alerted the Turkish Coast Guard (TCG) who already knew of the case and had launched an operation. The TCG informed Alarm Phone they found a boat at the location but only 7 people were on board, they were taken back to Turkey.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
