Summary of the Case: On Friday the 17th of June 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a boat in distress between Rhodes and Turkey. The relative had lost contact to the travellers and it was also not possible for us to establish a direct connection to the boat. However, we alerted to the Turkish coastguard to the distress situation, forwarding them the GPS position we had received from the relative. A few hours later, the Turkish coastguard informed us that they had found the travellers and brought them back to Turkey.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
