Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 26th of April 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of four men in distress in the Alboran Sea. The travellers had left on a small green fiber glass boat from Al Hoceima at around midday the previous day. We were not able to reach the travellers, but relayed all the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. In the afternoon the Spanish Guardia Civil confirmed that they had rescued a boat corresponding to the information we had given them and soon after we learned from the relative that the travellers had arrived safely to Motril.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
