Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Friday the 25th of March 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of around 125 travellers, including 16 women and several children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Al Khums, Libya, on a black rubber boat the same morning at 02.00 CET. We managed to reach the travellers who were panicking and told us that water was entering their boat. The connection was bad, but we finally managed to get their GPS position, and relayed all the information we had to the relevant search and rescue authorities. We stayed in contact with the travellers and forwarded their updated position to the authorities when possible.
In the evening, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the search and rescue NGO vessel Ocean Viking. We also learned that two travellers had died during the journey. One body was recovered by Ocean Viking while they were unable to recover the second body due to weather conditions.
