Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 1st of June 2022

Case name: 2022_05_31-Eastern Med908
Situation: 28 people were stuck on a Greek island, while applying for interim measures they were pushed back to Turkey
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Eastern Med

Summary of the Case:
On the 1st of June the Alarmphone was contacted by about 28-34 people who were stuck on an island in the Evros/Meriç river. The people told us, they do not want the Greek authorities to know about them as they already tried to cross the border several times and have been pushed back, beaten and tortured by Turkish and Greek Borderguards. They told us that this time Turkish army was patrolling at the border, sending those to jail who they think are part of YPJ.
We alerted the UNHCR and several NGOs. The lawyers from Rule39 also applied for interim measures at the European Court of Human rightsfor this group. Most of the people didn't have papers anymore because the Borderguards had taken them away.
Before the interim measures were decided in court, the people were pushed back and taken back to Turkey.
