Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 23rd of November 2018Case name: 2018_11_23-AEG462
Situation: 19 people, returned to Turkey or still in Greece?
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Aegean Sea
Summary of the Case: On the 23rd of November at 7.45pm CET, the Alarm Phone was contacted regarding a group of 19 people, (including 2 women, 1 of whom was pregnant, and a child) who had crossed the river Evros/ Meric and the Turkish-Greek landborder 3 days prior. The shift team was contacted because the people were very afraid that the Greek Police would beat them and return them to Turkey. The shift team first contacted numerous rescue and protection agencies, including UNHCR and the Greek Police, noting that the people were already in Greece and wished to apply for asylum. However, the shift team was unable to maintain a stable connection with the travelers, and for the next 36 hours, received conflicting information about the exact location of the travelers, namely whether they had been returned to Turkey or were still in Greece. Until today we remained unable to find out what happened to the people.
