Situation: 59 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Sea, intercepted by the Moroccan navy and brought back to Laayoune.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea
Summary: On Monday the 24th of January 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team received a direct call from a group of 59 travellers, including 12 women and three children, in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left the previous evening from Tarfaya on a grey rubber boat, and told us that they were almost out of fuel and had lost their orientation. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately forwarded all the information we had to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. They told us that the search and rescue would be coordinated by the Moroccan rescue authorities. In the late evening, both Salvamento Maritimo and the Moroccan rescue authorities confirmed that the Moroccan navy had intercepted the travellers. The next day we learned that they had been brought back to Laayoune.
