Situation: 37 travellers in distress in the Atlantic Sea, rescued by Salvamento Maritimo.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Atlantic Sea
Summary: On Friday the 17th of September 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 37 travellers, 18 men, 14 women and five children, in distress in the Atlantic Sea. The travellers had left two days earlier at 04.00 CEST on a blue rubber boat, and were heading towards the Canary Islands. We were not able to reach the travellers directly, but forwarded all the information we had, including the phone number of people on the boat, to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. Through the relative we learned that the travellers had run out of fuel. We continued trying to reach the boat throughout the evening and night without success. The following morning Salvamento Maritimo confirmed to us that they had rescued the travellers.
