Summary of Case: In the late evening of January 22nd Alarm Phone was called by a relative who alerted us to a group of 7 women, two children and 44 men in distress who had departed Tarfaya the previous night. The relative gave us contact numbers to the boat in distress but we were unable to reach anyone. We forwarded the distress call to authorities at 00.44 CET Janaury 23rd. In the morning of January 23rd we saw a tweet by Héroes del Mar, relating the rescue of a group of people in distress matching the information provided by the relative. At 15.15 CET the Spanish Search and Rescue organisation Salvamento Marítimo (SM) Las Plamas again confirmed the rescue.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
