Summary of the case: On Friday the 28th of January 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of around 120 travellers, including many women and children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left the previous evening from Abu Kamash on a white rubber boat. We managed to reach the travellers and get the GPS position of the boat and relayed this together with all other information we had to the relevant rescue authorities. We stayed in contact with the travellers and could hear how panic onboard increased. The rubber boat was damaged and taking in water and the travellers feared for their lives. The engine had also stopped working and the travellers were thus left adrift. We relayed updated positions as well as information about the situation on the boat to the authorities whenever possible.
Later in the day we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the NGO rescue vessel Aita Mari.

Border police patrols
