Summary of the case: On Saturday the 22nd of January 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of around 80 travellers, including several women and children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Zuwara on Thursday night on a wooden boat. We managed to reach the travellers and got their GPS position. We immediately relayed all the information we had to the relevant rescue authorities. We stayed in contact with the travellers and updated the authorities with their GPS position when possible. Eventually, we lost contact to the boat. In the early morning we learned that a boat matching the description we had been given was being rescued by the Italian coastguard and would be brought to Lampedusa.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
