Situation: 80 travellers in distress in the Central Med, intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard and brought back to Libya.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Thursday the 20th of January 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 80 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. They had left from Sabratha the previous night at around 21.30 CET on a white rubber boat. We managed to reach the travellers and got their GPS position. We relayed all the information we had to the relevant rescue authorities. We stayed in touch with the boat and learned that the situation was deteriorating as weather was getting worse and water started entering the boast. When possible, we kept authorities updated with GPS positions from the boat. In a call at 11.31 CET the travellers told us that the so-called Libyan coastguard was there and that they were attacking the boat, trying to sink it and thus putting the lives of everyone onboard in danger. After this, we were no longer able to reach the travellers. In the afternoon, we learned that the travellers had been intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard and brought back to Libya.
