Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Thursday the 16th of December 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of around 50 travellers, including 12 women and eight children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sabratha, Libya, on a blue rubber boat. We managed to reach the travellers who told us that they had almost run out of fuel and that water was entering their boat. We also got their GPS position and immediately relayed all information we had to the relevant rescue authorities. We stayed in contact with the boat and could forward their updated position to the authorities in the early morning. In the afternoon, we learned from the relative that the travellers had arrived safely on land.
