Summary of the case: On Sunday the 26th of December 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of around 80 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. We managed to reach the travellers who told us that they were on a grey rubber boat, and that their boat had started losing air and taking in water. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately forwarded all information we had to the relevant rescue authorities as well as rescue NGOs. We stayed in touch with the travellers and relayed updates about their situation and position to the authorities. At 12.50 CET the travellers told us that they could see a bigger vessel approaching. It was later confirmed that this vessel was the Sea Watch 3, operated by the rescue organisation Sea Watch, which rescued all of the travellers.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
