Case name: 2021_09_17WM711

Situation: 17 travellers in distress in the Western Med, rescued and put in detention in Almeria.

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean

Summary: On Friday the 17th of September 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team received a direct call from a group of 17 travellers, including one woman and two children, in distress in the Western Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Tlemcen, Algeria, the previous night on a black rubber boat. The travellers told us that they they had run out of fuel and were in urgent distress. We managed to get their GPS position, which we immediately forwarded, together with all other information we had, to the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo. After losing contact to the travellers during the night, the following afternoon we reached them. They told us that they had been taken to the detention centre in Almeria.
