Case name: 2021_10_18-CM596

Situation: 40 travellers in distress in the Central Med, arrived to Lampedusa.

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean

Summary of the case: On Monday the 18th of October 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of around 40 travellers, including 18 children some of which were disabled. The travellers had left the previous day at around 17.00 CEST from Abu Kammash, Libya, on a blue wooden boat. After trying for many hours we finally managed to reach the boat. The travellers told us that water was entering the boat and that they needed urgent assistance. They also managed to pass on their GPS position. After this, we immediately forwarded all information to the relevant rescue authorities. Some hours later we received an updated position of the travellers, which we also relayed to the authorities. The Italian coastguard refused to give us any information about ongoing search and rescue operations, but in the evening we learned that a boat matching the description we had been given had arrived to the Italian island Lampedusa.

  • Border police patrols

While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33). • Exclusive Economic Zone

Maritime area beyond and adjacent to the territorial sea in which the coastal state exercises sovereign rights for the purposes of exploring and exploiting, conserving and managing the natural resources, whether living or non-living, the seabed and its subsoil and the superjacent waters. Its breadth is 200 nautical miles from the straight baselines from which the territorial sea is measured (UNCLOS, Arts. 55, 56 and 57).
