Summary of the Case:
In the morning of Saturday the 31st of July the Alarm Phone was alerted to a boat in distress by a worried relative of one of the travellers. The boat, which had departed from Libya in the very early morning, was carrying 54 travellers including 12 women and 2 children. At 10:50h CEST our shift team managed to reach the travellers and obtain a GPS position. Soon after they called us back and told us they could see a boat in the distance. At 11:25h we alerted Libyan authorities and NGO search and rescue boats. At 12:56h we received an email by the NGO boat Ocean Viking (OV) informing they had rescued 54 travellers and assumed this was the boat we alerted them about.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
