Case name: 2021_07_21-CM509

Situation: Alarm Phone alerted to between 100-200 travellers stuck in the port of Zarzis, eventually brought to hospital.

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean

Summary of the case:

In the evening of Wednesday the 21st of July 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by relatives to a boat in distress carrying between 100 and 200 travellers. The travellers were in the port of Zarzis, but told us that they were not being allowed to disembark. According to relatives there were between 13 and 20 dead bodies onboard. The travellers had run out of water, and several of them were sick. At 19.00 CEST we sent an email to the Tunisian authorities as well as the UNHCR and IOM, informing them about the situation. Although we never got any response from the authorities, we learned from the relatives that the travellers were eventually brought to the hospital in Zarzis.
