Situation: 15 travellers in distress in the Central Med, intercepted by the Tunisian coastguard.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Thursday the 16th of December 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team received a direct call from a boat in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. Onboard were 15 travellers, including three women and several children. The travellers had left from Libya three days earlier on a green wooden boat and told us that their engine had broken down. We managed to get the GPS position of the travellers, and forwarded all information we had to the relevant rescue authorities. We stayed in touch with the travellers and could hear their increasing panic during out calls. We forwarded their updated GPS position to the authorities when possible. The Tunisian coastguard confirmed to us that they had sent assets to conduct search and rescue. The following afternoon we learned that the boat had been intercepted by the Tunisian coastguard and that the travellers had been taken to Tunisia.
