Case name:2021_06_01-AEG789

Situation: 23 travellers rescued by the Turkish Coastguard after push-back from Greek waters

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Aegean Sea

Summary of the Case:

At 0:42 CEST on the 18th of June we were alerted by a relative about a boat with 23 people near Lesvos. We were never able to establish a direct contact to the people on the boat. We called the Greek Coastguard who told us they spotted a red rubber boat in the night and that we should call the Turkish Coastguard. We insist that the position is near Lesvos, he agrees and repeats that the boat they spotted was in Turkish waters. In the morning the Turksih Coastguard told us they rescued a red rubber boat in the night, we assumed it was the 23 people who were pushed back.
