Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 19th of November 2020Case name: 2019_11_19-CM332
Situation: 56 people (7 women, 46 men, 3 children) departed from Garabuli, Libya, outcome unknown
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the Case:
On the 19th November 2020 the Alarm Phone was contacted by a fisherman who had encountered a wooden boat at sea with 56 people on board. They had passed the Alarm Phone number to those on the boat but did not have any contact number for them.
The fisherman knew that there were seven women on the boat, three children, and 46 men. We were also informed that the boat had left from Garabuli, Libya, and that those on board were from Guinea, Mali, and Côte D'Ivoire.
The fisherman told us that another colleague had also sighted them the previous morning on the 17th November at about 06:00h CET, 100km
from the coast. Their engine appeared to be working at the time and they were moving, but as the weather at sea was very bad for the
rest of that day the fishermen who had seen them were very concerned about what would happen to those on the boat.
Following receipt of this information we contacted the Coastguard at 00:21h CET to advise them of the missing boat and urged them to launch a search and rescue mission.
Following this we did not receive any more information about this boat and the outcome of the 56 people who were on board remains
unclear.
