Summary of the Case: On October 27th, 2018, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to two cases. The first was a distress case: although the boat of 13 people was rescued by the Turkish Coastguard, one woman was found dead. The other boat had 20 people and was also rescued by the Turkish Coastguard.
In the first case, the shift team received news at 3.50pm CET of a drowning boat with 13 people including 5 children. The shift team immediately called the Greek coastguard but was directed to the Turkish coastguard because the boat’s location was in Turkish waters. At 4.10pm, the shift team received news that the boat had been rescued by the Turkish coastguard, and that one woman had died.
In the second case, the shift team received a distress alert at 7.07pm CET. During a phone call with the boat, it was clear that they were in a dangerous situation. The shift team contacted the Greek and Turkish coastguards to alert them. At 7.30pm the Alarm Phone received confirmation that the boat had been saved by the Turkish Coastguard.
