Summary of the Case: ‪On Friday, the 16th of October 2015, the Alarm Phone was alerted to one case in the Western Mediterranean. A man from Morocco called us around 1am and told us that friends of his had left Tanger on Thursday night around 10pm. We understood that the boat was red and that one of the eleven persons on board was ill. The contact person did not give us the number of the travellers, nor their position. We waited to get more information about the case, but eventually agreed with the contact person to call Salvamento Maritimo at 2.30am. S.M. told us that they needed a number of the travellers to become active, which we could not provide. During the following hours, we tried to reach the contact person in Morocco and Salvamento Maritimo, but without success. At 7am, S.M. eventually sent us an e-mail saying that a Moroccan patrol boat has picked up a boat with 11 persons.‬‬

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
