Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigation, 7th of September 2015

Case name: 2015_09_07-WM51
Situation: Alarm Phone alerted to 8-9 people in distress in the Western Med
Status of WTM Investigations: Concluded
Place of Incidents: Western Mediterranean Sea

Summary of the Cases: On Monday the 7th of September 2015, the Alarm Phone was alerted at approximately 9am to a group of 8-9 persons who were at sea and in distress between Spain and Morocco. We contacted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo who asks us to send them an email with all the details. They said that they would then launch a search and rescue operation. The travellers themselves could not be reached but at 10.58am, Salvamento Maritimo confirmed the rescue of 9 people – they would be brought to Tarifa/Spain. While we cannot fully verify whether this was the vessel in question, it can be presumed.

  • Border police patrols

While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33). • Exclusive Economic Zone

Maritime area beyond and adjacent to the territorial sea in which the coastal state exercises sovereign rights for the purposes of exploring and exploiting, conserving and managing the natural resources, whether living or non-living, the seabed and its subsoil and the superjacent waters. Its breadth is 200 nautical miles from the straight baselines from which the territorial sea is measured (UNCLOS, Arts. 55, 56 and 57).
