Summary of the Case: At 7.30pm CET on March 2, 2019, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 46 travelers that had just landed on the island of Lesvos. It was difficult to communicate with the travelers, although the shift team continuously called the number of the travelers’ phone. It was thus impossible to receive their location. Ultimately, the travelers handed the phone to personnel from the rescue team who confirmed that everyone was fine.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
