Situation: Around 30 people pushed back after arriving to the Island Samos. Following the pushback, they were picked up by the Turkish coastguard.

Summary of the Case: On Wednesday the 1st of June 2022, the Alarmphone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 27 travellers who had arrived to the Greek island Samos. The travellers had arrived by boat autonomously but were in urgent need of medical assistance. We immediately alerted all relevant authorities to the situation. The NGO Doctors without Borders went to the location of the travellers to provide assistance, but were not able to find them. Later, we learned that the Turkish coastguard had picked up a group corresponding to the description we had received, who had been pushed back by the Hellenic Coast Guard, transferred to a raft and abandoned at sea.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
