Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean Sea
Summary of the Case: On Friday the 22nd of June, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to two boats in distress in the strait of Gibraltar. Both boats were rescued by the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo (SM).
In the early hours of the morning, the Alarm Phone received a call about a boat that left from Cap Spartel, Morocco at 7 pm moroccan time. Our connection to the boat was difficult and we did not receive a position. We lost touch with the boat for several hours. At 4.53am, we received news from the boat by our contact person. We were asked to call SM. We called SM and passed on the information about the boat. At 6.09am we received the confirmation that the boat had landed in Spain.
At 6.46am, The Alarm Phone received news about a boat with 9 people who had left from Cap Spartel at 1AM Moroccan time. We corresponded with the boat and contact person for several hours. At 9 am, we called SM who said they had rescued two boats and brought them to Spain. We later confirmed the travellers had arrived in Spain.
