Summary of the Case: On Sunday the 1st of April, at 6.40pm, the Alarm Phone shift team was called by a contact person, who passed on information about a group of 12 travellers, who had left from Tangier at 5.00am. The last contact he had had to the travellers was at midday, where they were still not in distress, and informed him that they had spotted a helicopter, but since then he had been unable to reach them.
Through tweets from the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo (SM) we found out that they had rescued one survivor and recovered four bodies from a capsized boat which started out with 12 people. We called SM, and from the phone number we had received from the contact person, we could confirm that this was the boat which had capsized. We passed on the sad news to the contact person.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
