Summary of the Case: On Tuesday, the 9th of January 2018, our Alarm Phone shift team was alerted around 6.30pm to a boat in the Western Mediterranean Sea. The contact person in Morocco informed us that the boat had left from Tangier, and 12 people were on board. We agreed that we would stay in touch and monitor their trajectory. At 20.41pm, we spoke to our contact person again and he informed us that the boat had been intercepted by the Moroccan Navy.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
